What is a French drain and do I need one?
It is a perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench that collects water underground and carries it somewhere harmless. You need one when part of your property stays soggy long after the rain has stopped, or when water is running toward the house instead of away from it.
Part of my yard stays wet all winter. What fixes that?
First we work out where the water is coming from and where it wants to go, because the fix is different for a spring, for roof runoff, and for a neighbour's grade draining onto you. It might be a French drain, a channel drain, a dry creek bed, or just clearing a ditch that has packed solid with needle litter.
