Most of the properties up here are on a grade, and sooner or later the grade wants to move. We build timber walls, dry-stacked stone, block, and gabion, and we tier them when one tall wall would be the wrong answer. What matters as much as the wall is what goes behind it: drain rock and a line to take the water away, because a wall with nowhere for water to go is a wall with a few winters left in it. Access decides a lot too. On tight lots we have dug the whole cut by hand rather than bring a machine through a finished yard, and we will tell you which one your property needs at the estimate.

What goes behind a retaining wall?
Drain rock and a drain line, and it matters as much as the wall itself. A wall with nowhere for water to go builds up pressure behind it over a few wet winters and starts to lean. That is the most common reason an older wall fails.
One tall wall or several smaller ones?
It depends on the grade and the soil. Terracing is often the better answer on a steep cut, and it gives you usable garden beds instead of one blank face. We will lay out what the slope actually needs.
Can you build where a machine cannot reach?
Yes. We have dug whole cuts by hand on tight lots rather than run a machine through a finished yard. It is slower and we will say so in the quote, but on some properties it is the only way to do it without wrecking what is already there.
