When should sprinklers be winterized in Nevada County?
Before the first hard freeze, and earlier at elevation. Places like Cascade Shores get cold sooner than Nevada City does, so we would rather blow a system out a few weeks early than get a call about a split line in December.
What does winter maintenance include?
Sprinkler blowouts and pipe weatherproofing, gutter clearing and roof blowing before the rain sets in, and drainage lines opened up so water goes where it is supposed to instead of across your beds.
Why clear gutters before winter rather than after?
Because packed gutters overflow, and in a foothill winter that water goes down the wall and into the ground beside the foundation. Clearing them in fall is the cheapest maintenance on this whole list.
Do you work through the winter?
Yes. Winter is when the drainage and gutter problems show themselves, and it is also the right window for dormant pruning on most fruit trees.
