Foothill clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it bakes, so a path laid straight onto native ground goes wavy by the second winter and starts holding water in the low spots. We dig it out, put in a base that drains, and set the stone on that. We also lift and reset old paths that have gone uneven, which is usually the cheaper answer when the brick itself is still sound.

Why does my brick path keep going uneven?

Can you reuse my existing brick or stone?
Often, yes, and it is usually the cheaper answer. If the material itself is sound we lift the whole run, rebuild the base properly, and reset the same stone. Worth finding out before anyone quotes you for all new material.
What is the difference between flagstone, pavers, and gravel paths?
Flagstone and pavers cost more up front and last longer with less fuss. Gravel and decomposed granite are quicker and cheaper but want topping up every few years and do not love a steep grade. Jay will tell you which suits the spot rather than which is dearest.
Do you do steps on a slope?
Yes. Cut into the grade and set with timber, stone, or gravel treads depending on the look and how steep it runs. Most of the properties up here need a few somewhere.
